Few other towns can boast of having a lake situated only a few hundred metres from the town centre. Dunmanway lake is suitably sized for cannooing, fishing and other sports. At the lakeside is a garden and picnic area for public use.
“Mid mountains hoary and famed in story,
Great Carbery’s glories Dunmanway lies;
With the Bandon flowing, it’s charms bestowing,
Which in Mount Owen does take its rise.
And there a lake is, where the duck and drake is,
And the crane can take its sweet feast of frogs,
And when night comes round,
Dark spirits surround it,
For there was drowned, Sir Richard Cox.”
